What are the German articles?
Articles are used with nouns. They can be definite: der, die, das (the); or indefinite: ein, eine (a, an). In English grammar, the article does not change its form, however, in German grammar, the article changes its form to indicate the gender, number and case of a noun.

Example
Lena ist eine Freundin von Lara und die Freundin von Franz.
Lena hat sich einen Donut und für Franz ein Eis gekauft. Das Eis und der Donut schmecken ihnen sehr gut.
Indefinite Articles
The indefinite articles are ein (masculine, neuter) and eine (feminine). We use the indefinite article:
- when we’re talking about something that is not specifically defined
- Example:
- Lena ist eine Freundin von Lara.Lena is a friend of Lara’s. (one of several)
- when we mention something in a text for the first time (introductory)
- Example:
- Lena hat sich einen Donut und für Franz ein Eis gekauft.Lena bought herself a donut and Franz an ice cream.
Definite Articles
The definite articles are der (masculine), die (feminine/plural), and das (neuter). We use the definite article:
- when we’re talking about something specific
- Example:
- Lena ist die Freundin von Franz.Lena is the girlfriend of Franz. (the only one – they are a couple)
- when we’ve already mentioned something, or assume it to be already known
- Example:
- Das Eis und der Donut schmecken ihnen sehr gut.The ice cream and the donut are very tasty.

Contractions: article + preposition
When a preposition is placed in front of a definite article, the two are contracted into one word. The table below displays a list of the most common preposition and article contractions.

No Article
We generally don’t use any article for:
- names of places
- Example:
- Sie wohnen in Bremen.They live in Bremen.
- the names of most countries except for e. g. die SchweizSwitzerland, die TürkeiTurkey, die USAThe United States
- Example:
- Wir machen Urlaub in Österreich.We’re going on holiday in Austria.
(but: Wir machen Urlaub in der Schweiz.)We’re going on holiday in Switzerland.
- Equalisations/identifications using the verbs sein/werden
- Example:
- Es ist Juli.It’s July.
Mein Bruder will Arzt werden.My brother wants to become a doctor.
- particular concrete abilities
- Example:
- Ich spiele Klavier/Tennis.I play piano/tennis.
Leo spricht Japanisch.Leo speaks Japanese.
- materials/substances e. g. Papierpaper, Holzwood, Wasserwater, Milchmilk, Eiseniron, but only in a general context. Use an article when talking about specific materials.
- Example:
- Papier wird aus Holz hergestellt.Paper is made out of wood.
Wir müssen noch Wasser kaufen.We have to buy water.
(but: Das Papier ist alle.The paper’s all used up./Wo ist das Holz für den Kamin?Where’s the wood for the fireplace?)
Negative Article kein
We use kein before nouns in negative sentences to mean no, not any or not a/an. It takes the same endings as the indefinite article ein.
- Examples:
- Das ist ein Eis. → Das ist kein Eis.That is an ice cream. → That is not an ice cream.
- Franz hat eine Freundin. → Franz hat keine Freundin.Franz has a girlfriend. → Franz doesn’t have a girlfriend.
